The Real Ore Miner's Complete Guide

The Real Ore Miner’s Guide

Mining is one of the most instantaneously lucrative fields you can find yourself in as a capsuleer in Eve.  The first skill you’ll need is Mining.  This skill adds 5% to your mining yield per level. (25% YIELD MAX)  Another skill, which is required for mining barges, is Astrogeology.  This skill adds 5% to your mining yield per level.  (25% YIELD MAX)   As a finishing touch you’ll want to get the skill Drones to level 5, to use 5 mining drones 2, (+33*5/60sec) which requires the Mining Drone Operation skill at level 5.  This skill grants an additional 25% to mining drone yield at level 5. (25% DRONE YIELD) Drones Interfacing  will grant an addition 50% at level 5 also. (50% DRONE YIELD) Mining Upgrades at level 4 will give you access to mining laser upgrade tier 2’s, which each yield an additional 9% (to the lasers only I believe though this is never specified).  MLU’s can stack up to 3 times, to a total of 17% roughly on the 2nd and 23% roughly on the 3rd. (23% LASER YIELD)  Finally, to go with your drones you’ll want to fit a mining drone augmenter tier 2 rig for 15%.  You’ll need the Drones Rigging skill trained to level 4 to pull those rigs off.  You’ll additionally, at a certain level, wish to train Cybernetics, to gain access to implants to train skills quicker, and to enhance mining yield another 5% maximally. (5% YIELD MAX)  You’ll need the Reprocessing skill trained enough to train ore specialized reprocessing skills, (e.g. Plagioclase Processing) in order to use crystals with the crystal using modulated strip miner 2 (+720/180sec) Of course, these strip miners are only usable on mining barges, and not ventures which are used during the earlier phase of mining.  But, it is important to note, you will not spend long mining in ventures in high security.  You’ll need level 4 in the according ore specific processing skill to use the mining crystals, and it is not necessary to train to level 5 in ore specific processing unless you wish to refine!
Above are percentage modifiers arising from skills.  Mining skill will unlock various techs of mining lasers from 1 to 2, and then strip miner 1 modulated strip miner 2, as it is trained.   The yields are good for the strip miner, and only better with the modulated strip miner 2 if crystals are used (360x2 for having the crystal, x1 for having no crystal).  And the cycle times are 60 seconds for those equipped to the venture/prospect and 180 seconds for those equipped to mining barges and exhumers.  Drones yield 20 and 33 for tiers 1 and 2 respectfully.  The percentages multiply together in a chain to become a function that looks somewhat like the following: (1,2,or3*720*1.25*1.25*1.23*1.05)+(33*5*1.25*1.27*1.50) for mining lasers and drones.
Beyond this default equation, a few practices can influence mining yield.  Drone yield is increased by mining an asteroid within 1000 meters of your spaceship.  Laser yield is increased by stopping and starting lasers about 70% through their cycle to reduce yield loss from cycles which destroy asteroids, thus yielding less than their duration ought to.  Just to clarify, being close the asteroid doesn’t increase yield, just increases yield over time.  The same with stopping the cycles to reduce lost mining cycles, or parts of cycles rather.  Total yield can be increased by using jet cans, 27500m3, the miasmos with a hauler, 42000m3, or something larger like an orca, or freighter for hauling.  This will cut down on travel time back and forth from station and keep your lasers and drones active at the asteroid belt for more of the duration of time you spend “mining.” Also giant enormous freight containers and such may be used to build up a pile of ore at the asteroid belt, again without warping back to station to unload as often.
Base yield multiplied by percentage modifiers results in a ton of ore.  Figuring out the market is the next step and you’ll need open office or Microsoft Excel to do it.  Start out by making a table of all the ores you’d like to mine and account for their profitability, and list them in a column.  Then source their prices in one of the 5 trade hubs for starters (and then later try all five), Jita, Hek, Dodixie, Rens, or Amarr.  Finally list their volumes in another corresponding column. Then run an equation over all the columns using the formula “=A2/D2” … This will yield the per m3 (cubic meter) price of the ore, what your ship can hold, and what your lasers and drones yield in terms of, m3s.  This value that you find in here is the real price of ore and what you should base your decision on when considering what to mine.  Depending upon the circumstances of your freighting and logistics, you can then consider what to mine based upon what is available around the trade hub you are near, and what ore that trade hub favors, more often than not a combination of the two.
Finally, you’ll want to find a fleet booster, the Mining Foreman skill can add up to 10% to the yield of all the miners in his squad within the system.  A fully maxed orca and orca pilot can yield more for their fleet by reducing cycle times 7% or more.  A fully maxed rorqual pilot with requisite skill will further increase this cycle reduction.  The statistics as they are represented in the game are hazy to me as I do not perform fleet boost within eve online as an orca or rorqual pilot presently, but for the individual miner it is enough to know 10% can be yielded in cubic meters, and 7% can be reduced in cycle time.  Many corporations have members who fleet boost for no charge in isk, many of these same corporations buy the ore from the members and friends of the corporation they boost.  It requires as little as being friendly and reasonable in pricing negotiations with an orca pilot to gain inclusion to this wonderful boost, and most miners are quite friendly people in my experience.
This concludes the real complete guide to mining.  Obviously, the mining skill tree edges one down the reprocessing path, but it is not necessary to follow that nudge.  Trade skills could be equally powerful, or orca piloting and boosting skills, perhaps freighting piloting skills.  All are options for which I do not have spreadsheets or knowledge for, but as I learn I am sure they may evolve.

If you are interested in my “Master Ore Yield to isk per minute spreadsheet” which covers ores veldspar through arkonor, speak with me in game/evemail me (Yoshiyo Solette) & I will gmail you a copy (so please provide your email in your evemail to me).  It comes available in open office format and Microsoft excel format.  Also below are screenshots if you’re interested in looking at the spreadsheet without any values plugged in.  The spreadsheet comes with directions I find informative enough for new users to understand how to use the spreadsheet.  However, again, should you need help learning it’s functionality I’m available through evemail on this topic.

Thank you very much for the game CCP,

Thank you very much miners for mining,

Peace & love,
